summary: pasting pets into rich edit controls on IE!
background: all this time i had thought that the pets were compatible with MSN spaces (as long as you used the image-based version of the pet code anyway). and i'd tested it, even… but with firefox only.
it turns out that when you add a blog entry to your MSN space using IE on windows, you get a nice rich text editor. the rich text editor doesn't allow you to paste in raw HTML code… trying to do so simply results in the HTML code being displayed as text, instead of the desired happy pet image.
(on any non-IE browser, you get a plain textarea where you can enter in all the HTML you want (although many tags are filtered out), so the pets work fine in those browsers.)
what to do? although it's tempting to simply tell everyone to use a non-IE browser, that wasn't a realistic option for me. and unlike many other bloggy sites with rich text editors, MSN spaces doesn't have an option to turn off rich text editing!

i did find this interesting bookmarklet which enables more controls in the rich text editor they use, including a checkbox that enables raw HTML editing, but that seemed like it would probably be beyond many of my visitors.
i was stuck…
then somehow (i don't remember what search terms i used) i came across this page– installation help for putting a web counter into your MSN space. it revealed to me that you could copy directly from a web page (rather than raw HTML code) and paste into the rich text editor… and all the underlying HTML would be pasted with it!
this was what i needed. unfortunately, the instructions as listed on that site involved many steps, including pasting raw HTML into a new text file on the user's computer, then finding it later and opening it in IE. that still seemed too complicated.
then i remembered that IE allows javascript to copy stuff to the clipboard. i'd never used this feature, because it was IE-only, but it made sense to use an IE-only feature to work around an IE-only issue!
unfortunately, all the examples i could find only copied plain, unformatted text from a textarea. that wouldn't help me… i needed to copy all the rich HTML goodness from a selection on the web page itself, not just from some form control. luckily, it turns out that you can copy from the web page itself. i couldn't find a good way to select only part of a page via scripting, here's what i do instead:
- create a web page containing only the code that is to be copied
- embed that web page inside a hidden iframe
- use the following javascript (triggered by a button) to copy the web page's content into the clipboard:

the end result: a single button that, when clicked, copies rich HTML content ready to be pasted into MSN spaces' rich text editor.
so far it seems to work, but i admit i have only tested in IE 6. i haven't tried 5.5 or 5 yet (which is as far back as i support).
but at least it works on 6. and it's kind of neat: when you paste the pet into the rich text editor, it shows up immediately, image and all, right in the edit box!

I went through all you have described herein, except for the Java part. I can only get the counter to be in a post, posts disappear every month, can you get it on the page itself? not in a post on the page.
Also I've tried getting background music, no luck with that either! I have no URL online to upload my music, I guess that's what you have to do.

as far as i know, the counter can only be in a post, which, as you rightly point out, is a pain. perhaps you can ask the people who make the counter if they have any ideas?
i'm not an expert at the background music stuff, but you are correct that you need a place to upload your music.

If someone eles is having the same problem, here's how to get it up:
Click START
Click RUN
Type in 'clipbrd' and it pops up.

I heard if you use this code:

then when you hit explorer it will open up to your root C: drive…
But I don't know where to put the code, I tried it as an exe and a bat file in my start up file but that didn't work… I got the idea here:

I love to hit my expolorer icon and be at my C: I hate having to go through all the clicks to get to where I want to be.
Also I put the 'Run" command in the start menu on my desktop! I can run things quikly that way, nice shortcut.

The best place for a counter in msn spaces is in a sandbox… then you don't have to move it all the time…
I'm trying too to pur a javascpript in NSM spaces… I've got a idea but I don't know how to do: if we created a false document with the notepad with inside the javascript we want and save it as a music or picture… and then put it in a sand box (cusdom HTLM) in order to open it making beleuve the computer it is a picture or music…
Could you help me to realise it?

heres how to get windows media player on your msn space:
Windows Media Player PowerToy:
The Media Player Power Toy is designed to allow you to play audio and video files within your Space. While editing your Space specify the URL of a Media file located on the web in the Media Power Toy and hit Save. This will allow the people viewing your Space to watch or listen to the media file you have linked. You can customize the experience even more by altering the player settings (like auto start, times to play, and player mode) while editing your Space.
Please note that this PowerToy, like the others, is available in English ONLY for now and is UNSUPPORTED.
This feature is to be used for authorized content only. Please respect the creative efforts and intellectual property of others, and do not link to unauthorized materials. Linking to unauthorized material is a violation of the Spaces Code of Conduct and Terms of Use.
Follow these steps to add this Power Toy to your Space:
Log into Passport and Edit your Space.
In the Address bar of your web browser add the text “&powertoy=musicvideo” to the end of the displayed URL.
Click the Go button next to your web browser address bar.
Once the page has finished reloading, click on the Customize tab in your Space.
In the Modules drop down menu in the Customize tab there should be a listing for PowerToy: Windows Media Player. Click the word Add next to it and then click the Save button.
To get the URL codes for the music videos first u have to download ur music vids off Ares Or Limewire then wen they are saved on your computer in your music. go to www.filelodge.com register its free! and clik on upload files and find the file on your comp upload it n wen its finishd click ok then wen the page reloads right click on the song ans clik on properties and copy the URL and paste it into media player on your msn space!!!

Ive got the media player power tool and a music/video code. I have tried website names that have the video playing on it in the powertool thing. I have tried pastig the video code that i have of the video into the place where u put the url on the powertool(that didnt work either). I read that thing where u say make ur own website, but HOW ON EARTH DO YOU DO THAT! So, you put the code into the website you make and nothing else, and then take the url from that website and put it in the URL box of the powertool? hi there, wondered if u could help Ive been having so much trouble. I cant seem to play video's in my media player without them jolting and stopping.I've tried files I've converted myself , Files which I havent converted, 3 different hosting sites, and they're all exactly the same problem. Music is fine, its just the video's which wont play smoothly (the video's play okay until they are uploaded and are playing on my space) Ive even tried viewing it on other PC's , so its not my connection., and I've also tried adding it into an actual blog (rather than the media player itself) -same problem. I've had this since before msn upgraded the spaces, so I know Its not the upgrade problems preventing this.
I'd be really grateful If you could offer advise which might help me solve this problem, Really I would, I've been trying to figure this out for about 6 months now!

Ok, I got this Windows Media Player powertool in my msn space but it doesnt play the music that I have pasted the URL, but when I save it nothing happens. When I preview my space nothing plays, not happens at all.

If you want to do some cool stuff with you MSN spaces I have 1 website and 1 MSN spaces that is very helpful, I used alot of the codes on my MSN spaces…not all codes work but most of them do.

The problem is, you have to add that to the end of the URL not just type that in instead of it. In you case, it's obvious why it redirects you to "autosearch.msn.com bla bla bla"

I've tried:
streamload - works only sometimes
esnips - their link is not suited for embedding
freesite - even an mp3 is too big
and many more - all kinds of other issues
I've wasted so much time trying to find a real URL upload site for my music!!! I'm sick of it.
Does anyone have a free upload site that REALLY works?
I'm trying filelodge right now, but I'm already skeptical because of what everyone's writing. and I'll try Cool Toad, too, if File Lodge doesn't work.

I had this same problem, i had to upload my version of internet explorer… duno if u wana do that but that should fix ur problem with putting photo's on ur space.
I have just figures out how to put music on my space but all i have is ashley simpson… not exactly my taste… wondered if anyone had any rock music url codes that i could use! Meatloaf, Alice Cooper anything like that would be awesome!

hey brittany, its easy really. Just type "internet explorer" into google n pick one of the links that offers a free download of either Internet Explorer 6, or Internet Explorer 7 beta 2 (latest) and download it from there. Follow any instructions it gives u and voilla Internet explorer upgraded.
Beanii have u tried cutting and pasting? Works for me anyways.

I complained about not finding an upload site that actually works (for storing the music I want on my msn space).
Filelodge is working fine!
You have to be patient, because there are all kinds of glitches, but don't give up. Do the upload until it takes, get your link and simply paste it into your msn spaces media player.
Works great so far.
500MB space limit with 50MB file size limit.
I'm not a pro at this, but post a comment on my space if you need help. I'll do my best.

hey everyone, i think i figured out the adding of the music url's, and since no one is adding any useful info to questions being asked over and over, just thought i might add this -
when you cut and paste the url into media player, there might be a space at the end of the url - delete this out, and save it. this should keep the url in the space (mine deleted everytime i tried to save it) and hopefully it should now play.
it worked for me, but it could have been a fluke!
PS for file storage, i use fileden.com
PPS do a search on google for msn problems (ie. like adding powertoys, changing colours, adding counters etc) - For eg. I found this site which was useful: http://coder.jeeran.com/spaceguide.html

I'm having the same problem as the rest of you with not being able to upload photos. It's been broken for a good month now. No responce from Microsoft on why it's broken either.
